C. G. Jung was one of the most profound of twentieth-century thinkers, and in the twenty-first century his influence continues to exercise a profound effect in a number of different spheres, including psychology, religious studies, history, literature, and more interior, psychologically orientated astrological approaches. Jung’s unique capacity to synthesise older religious and philosophical ideas and practices with modern psychiatry and psychology resulted in a large body of writings whose importance cannot be overestimated. Over the decades since his death, and especially since the publication in 2009 of his private diaries, entitled Liber Novus and popularly known as The Red Book, many scholarly works have been published about the diverse influences that shaped his thinking. But Jung’s lifelong involvement and expertise in astrology has been ignored, although he made it clear in virtually every one of the eighteen volumes of his Collected Works that astrology was of primary importance in his understanding of the nature of time, the archetypes, synchronicity, personality structure, and human fate.

This workshop will explore Jung’s astrological work from the time he began to study the subject, examining which astrologers he learned from, his ideas about how and why it worked, his interpretation of its religious and philosophical implications, its incorporation into some of his most important psychological models, and its applications in the treatment of his patients. The material we will cover is based not only on Jung’s published writings, but also on the correspondence and documents available in his private archives, many of which have never before seen the light of day.

Jung acquired a number of interpretations of his own horoscope from practicing astrologers, and there are numerous horoscopes of patients, friends, and family members, in both his own and his wife Emma’s handwriting, found in his private archives. One of the most important things we will consider in this workshop is how Jung himself would have interpreted a horoscope.

jung

Jung’s fascination with various late antique cosmologies, which preoccupied him while working on The Red Book, were, as he himself noted, based on an astrological cosmology that focused on the celestial origin of the human soul, the dilemma of planetary fate, and the journey of the soul toward its transformation and freedom beyond the compulsions of the planetary spheres. Jung's persistent concern with astral fate as inner compulsion, and his interpretation of fate in the context of 'individuation', are central to the development and application of his ideas. We will therefore consider the ancient and medieval cosmologies that Jung worked with, and the ways in which his astrological insights drew on these ideas. Finally, we will focus on The Red Book itself, and how astrology infuses both the text and the images of this remarkable personal and, at the same time, mythic human journey.

jung

This workshop will explore historical sources as well as practical applications of astrological symbols. It is therefore not strictly an interpretative workshop, but is also one that takes into account a path of development steeped in the astrological history that present-day astrologers often neglect to explore. The material covered by the workshop may appeal not only to more psychologically orientated astrological students and practitioners, but also to those astrologers who have a sense of the importance of history and the relevance of how ideas develop over the centuries. Astrology does not stand alone, self-engendered and unrelated to other spheres of knowledge and exploration. This workshop will examine some of the same broader contexts that Jung himself spent a lifetime studying in order to create the unique psychology that was his great contribution to modern life.
