Initiation Into Astrology

November 9 - 18, 2006

"Anima Mundi and the Individual"
Co-Creating the Future with Astrology

with
Darby Costello and Richard Tarnas

World-renowned astrologers, scholars, teachers and authors Richard Tarnas and Darby Costello came together to create this fascinating and illuminating 9 day intensive astrological workshop in the tropical paradise that is Bali.

[A] mood of universal destruction and renewal . . . has set its mark on our age. This mood makes itself felt everywhere, politically, socially, and philosophically. We are living in what the Greeks called the kairos—the right moment—for a "metamorphosis of the gods," of the fundamental principles and symbols . . . So much is at stake and so much depends on the psychological constitution of the modern human. . . . Does the individual know that [s]he is the makeweight that tips the scales?

Carl G. Jung
The Undiscovered Self

We live in a time of tremendous change when the fate of the individual is closely intertwined with the fate of the collective and of the planet itself. And never before have individuals had such a potential for influencing and co-creating the larger unfolding drama of the world.

Astrology offers us a powerful tool for illuminating and navigating the shifting archetypal dynamics of the individual and the collective psyche, as well as the mysterious interaction between them. For those who have been initiated into its realm of understanding, astrology is a kind of “Rosetta Stone,” revealing the deeper impulses of the anima mundi, the soul of the world, and translating the language of the cosmos into human understanding.

Depth psychology in the past century has shown us that our personal unconscious encompasses collective, transpersonal, archetypal, ecological, ancestral, and even cosmic dimensions. Astrology shines a light on this radically expanded vision of the soul. Knowing our natal chart, our personal transits, and the ongoing major planetary cycles (the ‘world transits’), helps us to make conscious what is unconscious. This offers us greater freedom and greater responsibility to participate intelligently and creatively in the unfolding of these forces and patterns, rather than being merely their puppets. We also begin to forge what James Hillman has called an “archetypal eye”: that capacity to see through the particular and concrete to discern the universal and mythic.

One of the most helpful practices for personal growth and self-awareness is that of intensive transit analysis. By tracking carefully the correlations between the patterns of our experience and the positions of the planets in the sky as they align with our natal charts, and by cultivating a capacity for archetypal discernment, we are better able to recognize the universal forces shaping our lives. Such a practice also requires us to pay attention to the larger historical context of our personal transits, as reflected in major past, present, and upcoming outer-planet alignments and the archetypal dynamics of the collective psyche in which we are all embedded. This workshop is intended to be of interest and value to students of astrology at all levels. In the course of our time together, we will explore the following questions and topics:

  • How can we use astrology to best navigate our relationship with ourselves; our families and communities; the larger world; and the cosmos itself?
  • How can we use astrology to better negotiate our individual journey within the context of the ongoing collective journey, with its changing epochs, the shifting zeitgeist, and the planetary crisis of our time?

  • What is the relationship between personal transits and world transits—the ongoing movements and alignments of the planets in the sky at any given moment that reflect the unfolding patterns of collective human experience?

  • How can astrology be illuminated and made more powerful a tool by incorporating the concepts of depth psychology, at the same time that astrology can in turn illuminate and empower depth psychology?

  • What are the most significant outer-planet alignments of our time? How can we understand and then participate in them more fully?

  • How can music, film, and the arts serve as a window into the zeitgeist, revealing the depths and dynamic unfolding of the collective psyche? How can astrology enhance our appreciation of the arts, and how can the arts enhance our understanding of astrology?

  • How did Jung's understanding of synchronicity expand his world view, and what does this imply for our understanding of astrology?

  • What is the anima mundi, and what does astrology suggest about the connection between the collective unconscious and the cosmos itself?

  • How can astrology shine a new light on extraordinary moments of breakthrough and awakening in our lives, and on the mystery of extraordinary individuals and creative genius?

  • How can our understanding of the Solar and Lunar positions in our charts let us see through the social and cultural stereotypes that keep us chained to outworn images of what is male and what is female?

  • What role can individual psychotherapy, healing, and the spiritual path play in the face of the great historical challenges facing humanity and the Earth today?
